  • Gainesville, FL Air Conditioning Repair & Service

Gainesville is a city rich in history, culture and gorgeous natural parks. Before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, the city was inhabited by an Indian civilization known as the Timucuan. Abundant game, clean lakes, spacious prairies and a rich soil made the area an excellent place for everyday living. Eventually, ranchers established the renowned cattle ranch on Payne’s Prairie, and Franciscan priests established missions. The English and their Indian allies demolished these missions in the early 1700s. Although the Seminole War slowed progress, the Florida Railroad spurred trading and settlement. By 1860, Gainesville had over 200 residents. Gainesville was a major stronghold for the Confederate Commissary during the Civil War and was home to two major battles. During Reconstruction, schools were established, and Gainesville’s population had grown to 1,400 residents. The city was a busy mercantile center for vegetable and cotton crops.

By the 1880s, the city had continued to grow and develop and had electric lights, city water, paved streets, an opera house and telephones. At this time, Gainesville had approximately 3,000 residents. By the 20th century, Gainesville had a whopping 32,000 people. It was also during this period that Gainesville was chosen as the site for the University of Florida. During the 1930s, the university helped the city weather the storms of the Great Depression and the land boom collapse. Today, about 125,000 people call Gainesville home.
