Ductwork needs to be sized properly in order to maintain energy efficiency, airflow, and balance throughout the home. If your ductwork is too large, the air will not have enough velocity to reach the far side of the home. If it is too small, it works similarly to an HVAC system with dirty coils and/or a blower wheel. An air conditioner can only provide enough cooling capacity as the ductwork allows. The science of ductwork installation and airflow has evolved over the last decade or two so your ductwork may not meet today’s standards.
- Ducts that are too small, too large, or not sealed will have unbalanced airflow in the home
- Can create a negative pressure environment which will encourage attic air from infiltrating your home
- Will create hot and cold spots in your home
