Understanding the Energy Star® Label

Improving your home’s energy efficiency starts with the products you choose, and when it comes to HVAC systems, you always want to look for brands with an ENERGY STAR® rating. The ENERGY STAR label was established in 1992 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to help you, the consumer, find products that have met federal regulations regarding energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, and even sustainability.

Understanding ENERGY STAR ratings related to HVAC units can be a little difficult, especially if you don’t know where to start. That’s why our HVAC repair and installation experts at Bounds Heating & Air have decided to walk you through what these numbers mean for you and your home.

The ENERGY STAR Label

HVAC products with an ENERGY STAR rating have been proven to be up to 20% more energy efficient than other comparable HVAC units. This means you can expect to save on your energy bills by as much as 20% should you choose said products.

With regular maintenance and proper heating and air conditioning repair, these systems can virtually pay for themselves in savings in a matter of years, compounding the savings that you get for using them.

SEER Numbers

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a rating that shows you just how efficient a unit can be each season. This number can range from 13 (considered as low-efficiency appliances) to 23 (high-efficiency). When you’re looking for a replacement for your old heating or air conditioning system, consider getting a model with a high SEER number. The higher the rating, the more energy-efficient your unit will be.

You may also see an EER number. This stands for Energy Efficiency Ratio and is used to measure the performance of HVAC systems on a much smaller scale than the SEER.

Saving with ENERGY STAR Ratings

To maximize your savings, you want to limit your choices to products with 14.5 or higher SEER. Single HVAC models should have an EER of 11.0 while split-type HVAC systems should be 12.0 or higher. These are the minimum requirements for an ENERGY STAR label. However, it’s always best to choose the higher-rated options as these translate to bigger savings in the long run.

Is It Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner?

There comes a time in the life of every HVAC system when a replacement becomes necessary. Sometimes the signs are obvious; maybe your air conditioner has begun to emit odd sounds or smells, shown a marked drop in performance, or started to require more frequent repairs. Other times, the signs may not be immediately noticeable. Allow our HVAC repair and service professionals at Bounds Heating & Air to show you a few of the common signs that you may be due for a brand-new air conditioner.

Increase in Energy Bills

Older HVAC models are often found to be less energy-efficient than the newer models of today. In fact, the Department of Energy actually recommends upgrading aging HVAC equipment to that which has been certified with an ENERGY STAR® rating. The savings you’ll receive from making this switch are often enough to justify the cost of a new air conditioner. Moreover, choosing to operate inefficient HVAC systems will often set you back more than simply replacing it would.

Old Age

Most air conditioning systems have an estimated life span of 15 years. Any additional year beyond this 15-year benchmark is typically a bonus. At this point, you can expect your unit to require far more frequent air conditioning repair visits than usual, and the cost of these repairs can quickly add up. When it comes to this, it would be much more practical to have a new air conditioner installed rather than to continue to shell out money for more and more service visits.

Uneven Cooling

Regular wear and tear can be greatly slowed down by proper maintenance, but over time, they’ll still take their toll on your unit. One way this becomes apparent is when you begin to notice that your AC no longer cools as effectively as before. When this happens, it’s time to consider installing a new unit.

At Bounds Heating & Air, we’re your number one provider of HVAC maintenance, repair, and installation services. Give us a call at 352-472-2761 or fill out our online contact form to schedule your heating or air conditioning repair or installation service today. We serve clients in Alachua, FL.

How to Handle (And Avoid) Emergency HVAC Repairs

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

This old saying is just as true with regard to your HVAC system as with anything else. Keeping your heating and cooling units in excellent condition will not only help improve their energy efficiency, saving you money on utilities, but it can also extend the service life of your system. It’s best to have a regular maintenance program that includes all necessary inspections of your HVAC units.

Unfortunately, problems can sometimes still occur despite your best efforts to the contrary. When this happens, you have little choice but to call for an emergency HVAC repair. Our specialists at Bounds Heating & Air understand how incredibly inconvenient it is to have your heating or cooling system break down at the worst possible time, so to help you out, here are our best tips on how to handle these issues with as little trouble as possible.

Power Struggles

In a well-maintained HVAC system, the problem usually isn’t with the unit itself.  Sometimes power plugs can get dislodged, entirely cutting off the power to your home’s furnace or air conditioner. Survey the outlets to see if any of the power cables have become detached, then check to make sure everything is connected and all cords are in their proper place.

Thermostat Troubles

Many heating and air conditioning problems can be traced back to a faulty thermostat. Ensure your thermostat is operating correctly and in full battery mode. A low-power battery can affect the way your thermostat detects air temperature and cause your furnace to perform far less efficiently.

Free-Flowing Filters

When your air filters are clogged with dust and dirt, the flow of air is interrupted. This will eventually cause your heat exchanger to overheat, which will then trigger an automatic shutdown of your furnace as a safety measure. This issue is known as short cycling and is one of the most common reasons homeowners call for emergency air conditioning repair.

Check your furnace filters regularly every few weeks. Our experts recommend cleaning or replacing the filters at least once every 90 days, or sooner if necessary, to keep your system running smoothly and efficiently.

Maximizing Daylight Saving Time to Save on HVAC Costs

When Daylight Saving Time (DST) was first adopted by the United States in 1918, the objective was to “preserve daylight and provide standard time for the United States” (US Congress, 1918, 1942). Today, its benefits are ignored for the most part, and most Americans simply adjust their clocks forward, albeit grudgingly, as part of the annual event.

This spring, let our HVAC repair specialists at Bounds Heating & Air show how DST can actually help save you money when it comes to your heating and cooling expenses.

More Daylight

As we approach the summer solstice, the daylight hours grow longer, peaking during the solstice itself as we enjoy the longest period of daylight of the year. Adjusting our clocks forward by an hour makes it so that we’re able to take advantage of an extra hour of sunlight throughout DST.

Energy Savings

That one extra hour of daylight translates to one less hour you need to have your lights on. Likewise, the energy savings from DST extends to your heating and cooling. Because of the time skip, we save at least an hour’s worth of consumption on our electricity bills. Of course, this hour is recouped at the end of DST, but because of the re-adjustment, this is barely noticeable.

Additionally, the reduced usage can also extend the life of your unit, which means fewer air conditioning repair visits and even more savings.

Adjusting Your HVAC System

The Department of Energy estimates that for every degree you turn your thermostat down (in the winter) or up (in the summer) for 8 hours, you can cut up to 1% from your utility bill. Consider turning your thermostat down 7 to 10 degrees while you’re at work or when you’re asleep and you can save up to 10 to 15% on your total utility bill annually. These savings can be increased even more by making use of programmable thermostats.

At Bounds Heating & Air, we’re your number one provider of HVAC maintenance, repair, and installation services. Give us a call at 352-472-2761 or fill out our online contact form to schedule your heating or air conditioning service today. We serve clients in Gainesville, FL.

Use Your Thermostat to Make Your Home Cozy

Depending on the weather, the air temperature inside your house can mean the difference between a home that’s warm and cozy and one in which it feels like you’re roasting in an oven. On the other hand, let it get too cold and it can feel like you’re in a walk-in freezer. The solution to this is, of course, the trusty thermostat, which is what your HVAC maintenance pros at Bounds Heating and Air discuss in this blog post.

The modern, high-tech thermostats available today make it easy to cozy up your home in an instant. With multiple temperature settings for different times of the day, programmable thermostats such as these eliminate the need to be hands-on in adjusting the thermostat yourself every time it gets a little too cold or too hot throughout the day.

Smart Thermostats

With the advent of smarter and more modern technology, you have the capability of adjusting your smart thermostat without having to physically be in your home. For instance, if you were on vacation and were to suddenly remember that you forgot to fix the thermostat temperature to avoid using up unnecessary energy, you could quickly adjust the settings using your smartphone. These types of thermostats can be installed by air conditioning repair companies.

The Cost of Smart Thermostats

Such modern technology doesn’t come cheap, so be forewarned when choosing your smart thermostat. They may be convenient, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t pricey to buy or maintain. On the bright side, however, smart thermostats can really help you save on your energy bills, and if you get a good brand that’s correctly installed by professionals, it’s not likely to need too much maintenance.
